Quick answer: Charleroi is not central Brussels

Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL) lies roughly 60 km south of Brussels. Its name can be confusing: it is not Brussels Airport at Zaventem (BRU). For most visitors staying in Brussels, the main choices are:

  • Direct airport coach to Brussels-Midi / Brussel-Zuid, operated by Flibco.
  • TEC airport bus to Charleroi railway station, followed by an SNCB/NMBS train to Brussels.

The choice is less about which service is 'best' in isolation than about where your accommodation is and how much time you have for transfers.

Flibco: the direct bus to Brussels-Midi

Flibco's official timetable lists a direct, non-stop coach from the Terminal 1 shuttle-bus area at Charleroi Airport to Brussels-Midi, with the Brussels stop near Rue de France. It advertises a journey of approximately 55 minutes in normal traffic and frequent departures, commonly every 20 minutes.

These are operator reference figures, not a guaranteed door-to-door time. Allow for border checks if relevant, collecting baggage, locating the bus stop and any traffic. You will still need to walk, take the metro or catch another train from Midi if your hotel is near Grand-Place or the European Quarter.

Price and luggage: read the fare you actually buy

Flibco's page advertises introductory fares while its FAQ may show a different starting price. The real price varies with date, availability and fare package: check the live checkout rather than relying on a single headline amount.

Crucially, luggage allowances depend on the package. Flibco's current published LIGHT, SMART and PLUS conditions distinguish hand luggage and checked bags. If you're travelling with a large suitcase, a cheaper basic fare may not be the best total deal. Certain fare packages include flexibility or cancellation options; always check your own booking.

Tickets are sold on the operator's website and app. A flexible-day ticket does not mean infinite guaranteed space at every departure.

TEC bus plus train: the alternative

A local TEC airport connection brings passengers to the railway network in Charleroi. From there, an SNCB/NMBS service continues towards Brussels. This approach has more stages, but a rail arrival may be useful depending on your destination.

Before choosing it, compare the combined ticket price, number of bags, transfer time, station name and last connecting service. Do not assume the SNCB train leaves from the airport terminal itself.

Check the TEC transport planner and SNCB/NMBS journey planner.

From Brussels-Midi to your hotel

Brussels-Midi is a major international station, not the Grand-Place. If you're staying near Brussels-Central, check an onward SNCB connection or local transport; if you're staying near Schuman, the European Quarter or Saint-Gilles, a different metro/tram route may be better. A suitcase can make a short transfer feel longer, so plan the exit at Midi and final stop in advance.

Which route should you choose?

Direct coach if simplicity matters, particularly with tired travellers or no reason to change at Charleroi's rail station. Bus plus train if the rail itinerary genuinely fits your destination or offers a better overall combination. For a family or group, compare a private transfer's full price but do not assume it is cheaper.

For a very early flight, work backwards from the airline's check-in deadline and allow time for traffic, rather than simply taking the coach journey estimate and adding a few minutes.
